This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up - The Christmas edition

This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up at No Fighting, No Biting!

Katherine starts the carnival with:

-----------
Welcome to the last homeschool carnival of 2012! The season of Christmas is a time of kindness, love, joy, and being grateful. One of the gifts that makes us the most grateful is homeschooling, because it helps increase kindness, love, and joy. Our family wishes yours peace and much success in the coming year.

This is our first Christmas on our farm in Maine and for the first time we went out into the woods and chopped down a tree instead of buying one from a lot. Actually Tim sawed a 30 foot tall tree down and cut the top out for our Christmas tree. It may look a little Charlie Brownish, but just as I was so proud at Thanksgiving that some of the ingredients for the pumpkin pie, the stuffing, and the mashed potatoes came from our own garden, I am proud that our tree came from our own land.

This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up

This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up at As For My House.

Tiffany starts the carnival with:

----------
The biggest "news" in our homeschooling life is that one chapter of it has closed. My eldest, Nick, graduated in May, and is in the process of moving out as I put this post together.

There are plenty of issues surrounding that in all areas of our life, but for the Carnival, naturally, I'm going to focus on those related to homeschooling.

But "the end of the road" is really a dramatic exaggeration, because my homeschooling days are far from over! I have a 2nd grader and a four year-old still "enrolled".

Having one coming out the far end does make for a natural point of reflection – a "post-mortem," you might say. But you don't have to wait until then to pause and take stock.

Why don't more parents homeschool?

My wife and I are strong believers in homeschooling. We see great value that homeschooling provides in areas like the individual attention, the strong family relationships and the better moral environment. At one point I had a list of over fifty reasons why people should homeschool.

Every year there are more and more articles about the problems with public schools in the United States. Many children never graduate from high school and many of those who do graduate are functionally illiterate. Public schools are rarely a positive environment often including gangs, bullying and drugs. These government schools have become hostile to religion and basic Christian values. For a great summary of the dozens of problems with government schools check out Thomas Sowell's Inside American Education.

With all the problems in public schools why don't more parents homeschool?

It seems like many parents don't take the plunge because: It is too hard.

Because homeschooling is unknown many people feel like it is an incredible amount of work. There are a couple issues here. One is a concern over the amount of time needed to homeschool. A second is a belief by many parents that they are unable to homeschool their own children.

I am sure that many parents would be surprised at how easy homeschooling is, maybe even easier than public schools.

Having children in public schools today is a lot of work, from the constant fund raisings, the carpooling, all the late evening homework sessions and so on, having children in government schools takes a lot of time. Most parents would be surprised by how little time it takes to homeschool.

Much of the challenge teachers face in public schools is learning how to control a class of 25 plus students. Parents shouldn't have this problem. (An out of control child is a bigger problem than education.) There are dozens of ways for parents to get help. There are local support groups. There are online aids. There are blogs and magazines.

Janine and I have blogged for almost seven years now.  One of the reasons we keep going is we want to provide support and encouragement so more parents recognize that they can and should homeschool their children.  Hopefully over the next decade or so more and more parents will come to see the value of homeschooling and save their children from the cesspool of government schools.

This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up - Fall Transition

This week's Carnival of Homeschooling is up at Corn and Oil.

Susan starts the carnival with:

----------
Last Saturday our planet's northern hemisphere rolled into autumn. The autumnal equinox reminded us of the later sunrises and earlier sunsets. Cool autumn evenings with a bit of frost here and there prepare us slowly for winter in the northern states. Fall is my favorite season and sometimes it seems to pass too quickly. Digging up the spiked iris plants and magnificent cannas to pack away from the bitter cold, while troweling in garlic bulbs to root and settle in preparation for a late spring harvest is a usual pattern here on our Illinois farm.

Homeschoolers know how to tuck in and prepare in the comfort of home.

My early brushes with homeschooling

This weekend I was brainstorming for a homeschooling topic. I wanted something I could submit to the Carnival of Homeschooling. Sunday it hit me that in almost seven years of blogging I have never mentioned my first brush with homeschooling. I wasn't aware until I was in my late teens or early twenties that in the 1970s I might have homeschooled.

Education goes deep in my family. Both my parents and all four of my grandparents earned college degrees. My mother taught math and physics at a high school in Alaska when she and my father got married. Her mother taught home economics for decades. There are many others in my family who have taught over the years.

In the early 1970s there was a big push for busing. My parents didn't want to have their children spend an hour or more on the bus each day. They investigated the possibilities of private schools, but found them to be expensive. They knew of Calvert School. They bought the curriculum for a complete year to check it out. The school district got enough push back from the parents that they dropped the idea of busing children around and so my parents dropped the idea of using the Calvert system.

I have a cousin who was homeschooling in the late 1980s. When we got together for family reunions I was impressed with how his children were doing.

My younger sister got married several years before me. In the early 1990s as she started having children she fell in with a group of like-minded mothers. Many of these women homeschooled. As my sister's children grew older she decided to homeschool.

So when Janine and I started having children we were acquainted with the idea. We could see that it worked well. As our children started getting to the appropriate age we decided to give it a try, and as they say the rest is history.

Back in the early 1970s homeschooling was barely getting started as a movement and it appears my parents didn't even know about it.  But they were considering it.  I wonder how my life might have turned out if the school district had pushed hard for busing?

Relearned lessons - using the right tool

I was reminded this weekend of just how important it is to have the right tool.

As part of getting our home organized we decided to get a shed for our backyard.  We selected a premade shed.  It will be about eight feet wide, four feet deep and the highest point will be just over seven feet.  It will hold all of our garden and yard tools.

The kit arrived last Thursday.  I dug out the instructions Saturday.  I skimmed through them and it appeared fairly straightforward.  The pieces would fit together and I'd tighten screws to lock the pieces together.

The first step was to anchor the shed floor to a wooden box or a slab of concrete.  We already have a small slab behind our house.  Janine and I planned to locate the shed near a corner, close to the garden.  We went over to a local Home Depot and asked what we needed.  A helpful man walked me through the basic steps of drilling the holes and putting in the anchors.  It seemed easy.   We picked up a concrete bit for my drill and a box of anchors.

Back at home the progress was slow, painfully slow.  The bit lasted for over a half hour.  All I had to show for the effort were two holes about three fourths of an inch.  I purchased another concrete drill bit and got a little farther.  But at this rate I could go for a couple more hours and wear out half a dozen, or more, bits.

I took a break and did some research on the internet.  I learned that for young concrete, a basic drill and a concrete drill bit may work.  But concrete gets tougher as it cures.  It cures from the outside in.  Our house was built in 1957.  The previous owners, back in the 60s or 70s, had poured two layers of concrete.  We had old concrete.  Old concrete needs a special tool known as a "hammer drill."  This is a special drill which makes regular impacts on the concrete through the bit.

This morning I purchased another concrete drill bit, for hammer drills, and rented a hammer drill.  In less than five minutes all four holes were made, to depths of about three inches.  After all the hassle Saturday it was just amazing to see the hammer drill so effortlessly push through the concrete.  It was almost like a knife going through warm butter.

So what does this have to do with homeschooling?

One of the great benefits of homeschooling is we are not forced by some remote bureaucrat to follow official procedures, to use specific text books or teach in a certain way.  We can use the right process or textbook for our children.  Each child often needs slightly different approaches, and sometimes majorly different approaches.  We can go fast or slow.  We can try different methods.  We can even put a curriculum on the back burner and pick it up months, or even years later.

The problem of public education's approach to have just an approved method was driven into my brain while reading Left Back: A Century of Battles over School Reform by Diane Ravitch.  Page after page describes how the "experts" cane up with a new theory about the "best" way to teach children.  Education schools would twist and turn chasing after the latest fad while children would suffer with poorer and poorer education.   (If you have a couple hours and don't mind being depressed borrow Left Back from your local library.)

Public education seems to want the "one true" way for teaching children when in fact there are many ways which seem to work with different children.  I am reminded of Malcolm Gladwell's TED talk on spaghetti sauce.  He recounts how for decades the food industry looked for the one spaghetti sauce that everyone would buy.  One researcher figured out that different people wanted different types of spaghetti sauce.

As homeschoolers we have the opportunity to find and use the right approach for each of our children.  We're not locked into a one size fits all mentality.  We can use the right tool to make sure our children get a great education.

Week 1 of School: Celebrating the Sabbath

The best part about starting a new school year!

I paid her to say that ;-)

It's only been a week, but we are really loving our curriculum so far - My Father's World: Creation to the Greeks. This week, we've been reading from a book called "Celebrate the Feasts" and have been learning about observing the Sabbath. We did activities all week to prepare for our meal which we celebrated last night.

We made candles - one for each person in our family and one for our future adopted child ;-)  "All of the flames, although they are separate, share the same source, symbolic of the family depending on God for strength and life."

Chem Lab Camp Day 1

As I mentioned in Lab Sciences, providing chemistry lab experience is a bit of a challenge for homeschoolers like us.

Today, was the first day of my Do-it-yourself Chemistry Lab Camp.  We got off to a good start.  We have 12 homeschool high school students meeting in my one car garage.

The kids did well and had a good time.  I had been a little worried that 4.5 hours was going to be too much at one sitting.  It helped that we had a master teacher and a short 15 minute break with snacks in the middle.

We really like the lab kit,CK01A Standard/Honors Home School Chemistry Laboratory Kit by Home Scientist LLC.  When we ordered 6 kits, they threw in extra goggles because they correctly assumed were were doing a co-op class.

The only real problem we had was the circuit breaker.  The outlet on the ceiling for the garage door couldn't handle the two hot plates, hair dryer and desk lamp.  We ended up running an extension cord into the kitchen.

And speaking of kitchens, the moms who stayed hung out and discussed politics while I cleaned my beautifully remodeled kitchen.

I'm also really glad we kept our old refrigerator in the laundry room.   It is a great place to store today's experiments on recrystallization.
