1804 - Franklin Pierce's Birthday
Franklin Pierce was the 14th President of the United States. Franklin Pierce's tone was mournful at his inauguration because his 11 year old son was killed in a train accident just two months before. Pierce supported the Compromise of 1850. He repealed the Missouri Compromise with the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Kansas-Nebraska Act let settlers in those territories decide for themselves whether to allow slavery. This resulted in violence and was a prelude to the Civil War. Pierce lost public support and didn't run for a second term.
